A Bad Attempt at Good Health

by Meaghan posted September 22, 2010

As if the bed bugs weren’t bad enough, today NYC hosts the 2010 LIVE with Regis and Kelly High Heel-a-thon in Central Park to support The Heart Truth campaign for women’s heart health education and research.

Before I totally bash this event, I want to go on record as saying that I think promoting women’s awareness of heart disease and raising money to support its continual research is wonderful. But must we completely compromise their musculoskeletal health in the process?!

I just don’t understand the thought process behind this ridiculous race:

Let’s take the two things that cause women more structural problems than anything else (high heels and running) and combine them for a competition!

Who the heck thought this was a good idea?!

Again, I think supporting heart disease is great; and organized events that encourage communal support can work wonders for getting more people to exercise. But injury is one of the fastest deterrents, and I’m willing to bet attempting to sprint in high heels today will result in more than a few ankle sprains and knee problems.

As far as reducing the incidence of heart disease, we’d be better off having a STOP EATING CRAP-A-THON!
